Ciro Immobile insists Lazio ‘don’t want to just be making a cameo’ in the Champions League. ‘I know how tense it can get.’
The Biancocelesti are back in Europe’s premier competition for the first time in 13 years, having finished fourth in Serie A.
“We haven’t changed much over the summer, as it has been a constant growth over the past few years for players, coach and club,” Immobile told Lazio Style Channel from their training camp in Auronzo di Cadore.
“Now it’s a new season with the Champions League and aiming to confirm our status in Serie A. We’re satisfied with the last four years under Simone Inzaghi, and although the lockdown did destabilise the squad, we got back on track pretty quickly.”
Immobile also won the Golden Shoe award as the top scorer in European league football for the 2020-21 season, beating Champions League winner Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich.
“It was exciting to leapfrog Lewandowski in the standings when I scored against Brescia, but so did my 100th goal for Lazio against Milan,” continued the forward.
“It wasn’t easy to win the Golden Boot, especially after a long lockdown, but I tried to recharge my batteries by spending time with the family.
“Now we’ve got the Champions League and I know how tense one can get in the build-up to those big games. It’s going to be tough to handle three tournaments, but we are enthusiastic and don’t want to just be making a cameo in the Champions League. We’re there to have fun.”
There are some new signings for the Biancocelesti, goalkeeper Pepe Reina and Gonzalo Escalante above all others.
“Pepe gives you the impression of being a real professional and that’s what he will being us at international level.”
