Roberto De Zerbi remains utterly committed to the Sassuolo philosophy, and is even ‘happy we conceded when caught in possession.’
The Neroverdi fought back from 3-1 down to beat Bologna 4-3 at the Stadio Dall’Ara, but the coach had some intriguing comments after the match.
“I am happy with the way we earned the result, because the moves for 3-2 and to provoke the own goal were well-worked team moves playing from the back,” De Zerbi told DAZN.
“I am even happy we conceded a goal when caught in possession with Manuel Locatelli. We must not be afraid of losing the ball, because it can happen, but if we want to play from the back and take the initiative, we will be repaid in the long run.
“At a certain point of the game, we were deservedly losing, because we were losing all the individual duels. Keeping possession is important, but getting it back is equally crucial.”
Sassuolo are unbeaten and leapfrogged Atalanta to go into second place, just two points shy of leaders Milan.
“It is thanks to the work done by the club and the results are a natural consequence. Having said that, it’s early days this season, we saw some surprising results yesterday too, and things can change very quickly.”
Domenico Berardi seems to be finding the kind of consistency under De Zerbi that he never managed in his career.
“If you get to know Berardi, you can’t help but love him. His talent is something more than who he is as a person. He wants to help others, both as a player and a lad.”
