Papu Gomez assures Atalanta have more ‘experience and self-belief’ in their second Champions League season, so have their sights set on Ajax.
The Bergamo boys had a dominant start to their second Champions League campaign, winning 4-0 away to Midtjylland.
“The team has a very different level of experience and above all of self-belief compared to last season,” Gomez told Sky Sport Italia.
“We also know that anything can happen in the group stage and we have to keep pushing to the last game. If we win the next with Ajax, we’ll be in a good position and hope to go into the next round.”
Liverpool earned a 1-0 win away to Ajax this evening, so they are top of the group with Atalanta after one match.
“Atalanta aren’t just gaining experience in this competition, because practically all of my teammates in the side are internationals, so these are all matches that help us to grow.”
The 32-year-old has scored five goals now in five competitive matches, along with two assists.
“Sometimes I play closer to the net, sometimes I am in a deeper position behind the strikers. The truth is, when you hit the ball and it starts going in regularly, it is like a chain reaction. I think I just have more attempts on goal than last year.
"The important thing is that we have players who never stop running. Marten De Roon and Remo Freuler are animals, they just keep going!"
