Diego Armando Maradona will remain in hospital at least until Monday because after brain surgery he is suffering from addiction ‘withdrawal symptoms.’

The Napoli and Argentina legend went under the knife on Tuesday following the discovery of a blood clot on his brain, a subdural hematoma, and remains in a clinic in Buenos Aires.

“We are sure Diego will remain here at least until Monday,” declared Doctor Leopoldo Luque to reporters.

However, the medic revealed there are some other issues that Maradona is dealing with following his hospital stay.

“He had certain symptoms, such as sweating, anxiety, tremors, that are all consistent with withdrawal symptoms. Diego is eager to leave hospital, but we are doing everything possible to convince him he has to stay in for a few more days. He has been sedated.”

Alfredo Cahe, who was Maradona’s personal doctor from 1977 to 2007, is not surprised by the revelations.

“What worries me enormously is what happens in Diego’s future,” Cahe told Superfutbol.

“His family agrees that Diego is unmanageable and he’s just going to deteriorate more and more. You have to take the bull by the horns and deal with this. It’s like when I took him to Cuba in 2000.

“Alcohol is a drug too and he exchanged one addiction for another.”
