Diego Maradona scored the goal of the century against England to make up for the Hand of God, reveals former referee Paolo Casarin.

El Pibe de Oro died on Wednesday at the age of 60 and the English tabloid media decided to reference his goal against England in the 1986 World Cup on their front pages.

However, rather than remember one of the greatest goals ever scored in a World Cup, they focused on him punching a cross past Peter Shilton.

“I’ll tell you a story about that,” former referee Casarin told Sky Sport Italia.

“He told me about the second goal, the one where he twisted, turned, left half the squad behind and scored the Goal of the Century, which came after the Hand of God goal.

“Maradona told me he had to score that goal, to put all of himself into it and prove what he was capable of, because the first one wasn’t valid.”
