“With Andrea I had the pleasure and honour to Coach him for three years,” Conte has told Sky Sport Italia this evening.
“We shared joys and some pain. From the moment I became CT my thoughts went to Andrea because, speaking in a clear manner, he can be very important.
“Even in September I wanted to call him up, even as he was injured, because I see how important he can be to the dressing room.”
Conte was asked if he sees Azerbaijan and Malta as easy tasks for Italy this month, on paper at least.
“We have seen in the last qualifying round Germany suffer with Scotland, Portugal lose to Albania. Nothing is easier and as far as we are concerned we will face motivated teams.
“Who will place? Pirlo and Buffon will. Those who do will do well, whilst remember that we also play again in three days’ time and I will have to take this into account, especially with the wing-backs. I still have one doubt in my line-up.
“To win you need, a little bit, a healthy ignorance. Immobile spoke to the Press yesterday of this ignorance in the sense of never giving up, and that is an inherent trait that one must have. It is a healthy ignorance that I like.”
