“We controlled the initiative, we allowed Lazio their chances in situations where we were ready not to make the mistake,” Italiano told Sky Sport Italia.
“We knew Lazio would be phenomenal on the counter and this was their approach, but we were still taken by surprise.
“This was one of our best performances of the season, but I’m learning at times that playing well in Serie A doesn’t always lead to results. In fact, it can be counter-productive in some situations.
“We kept control throughout, created more chances in the first half than all our other first halves put together. However, if this is what we’re doing in Week 10, I think it bodes well for the future, especially against a team that pinned Borussia Dortmund back on their own turf a few days ago.”
Despite the temporary frustration, Italiano assures he won’t change his ways for the minnows in their first ever Serie A campaign.
“We are on the right track, we will continue to take the initiative, not wait to be pummelled by the opponent before we react. We will continue with this spirit and this style of football.
“It’s a pity, it hurts to lose like this, but if we had been a little sharper and smarter, we could’ve scored several goals today.
“Our forwards have to expect far more of themselves when they get into those scoring positions. I am happy we create the chances and put ourselves into those positions, but if Diego Farias and Kevin Agudelo can be more clinical, then it’s even better.”
