“The calculations we make are not about the leadership, but about how far we are from fifth place. That means that when we eventually lose a game, and it will inevitably happen at some point, it won’t be a drama,” Maldini told Sky Sport Italia.
“We can play without too much pressure because the expectations did not have us up there. I won’t say it’s a fluke or anything, but we don’t have the same pressure as some others.”
It was pointed out to Maldini that the last three seasons in which Milan remained unbeaten in the first 11 games, they went on to win the Scudetto in 1991-92, 1992-93 and 2003-04.
“Starting strong helps, that’s obvious, but the teams of the past had super-competitive squads and also different expectations compared to the current side.”
The Rossoneri have really bonded since the lockdown and that unity seems to be the driving force behind their remarkable form.
“I was at Paolo Rossi’s funeral yesterday and I realised that squad won the 1982 World Cup because it was a genuine group of friends and teammates. Even 40 years later, they are still so close and there for each other. That bond doesn’t break.”
