Tonali had originally been shown a yellow card for his late tackle, but it was changed to a straight red following a VAR on-field review.

Franck Kessie had opened the scoring by converting a penalty, then Leao sealed it with a fantastic strike from an improbable angle.

Hakan Calhanoglu and Kessie also hit the woodwork, while Benevento missed a penalty with Gianluca Caprari.
