The Belgian’s header in the final minutes of extra time proved decisive, as Inter squeezed past 2-1 at the Stadio Franchi.

It means they set up a quarter-final clash with local rivals Milan on January 27.

“That game is in the future, this is the present,” Lukaku told RAI Sport.

“We are happy that we won today’s game against a very strong side with a great coach. We won and that is important for our confidence and we must continue like this.”

The Nerazzurri had seemed in control during the first half, but just as in Serie A at the weekend with Roma, they fell away as the second half wore on.

“I don’t know why it happens, but we are working on it and already discussed that after the Roma game. It shouldn’t happen, but we are a young team, we’re learning from these moments and are working hard to improve.”

Inter face another huge test this weekend in Serie A, their head-to-head with reigning champions Juventus.

“It’s going to be a very tactical match between two teams who are doing great things this season. We are ready and must prepare well for this game.”
