Sinisa Mihajlovic said Bologna will ‘eventually win against one of the giants’ and doesn’t think Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be affected by the Coppa Italia controversy.

The Rossoblu have struggled against the big teams in Italy and host Milan on Saturday, but Mihajlovic believes his team could cause an upset.

“We have arrived the first day of the second half,” he said at a press conference. “We have to meet them all again and I’m convinced that sooner or later we will beat one [of the giants], maybe tomorrow.

“But it also depends a lot on us, it’s not just a matter of luck. We know that they are stronger, but it has nothing to do with it. A football match always starts at 0-0 and that’s the beauty of it.”

Mihajlovic also wanted to defend his friend Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has been criticised after his red card and the clash with Romelu Lukaku in the 2-1 defeat to Inter in the Derby della Madonnina.

The Bologna coach didn’t hide that he tried to sign the veteran before he moved to Milan and is convinced the Swede made the right decision.

“If Ibrahimovic had come here, we certainly wouldn’t be where we are, but he chose Milan and I’m happy for him,” Mihajlovic said. “Talking about it now, it’s a fantasy football story.

“The fight with Lukaku? He won’t be distracted. He will come to win. I’m convinced of his qualities and that he will be able to score goals.”

Mihajlovic revealed he said no to Mario Mandzukic because of his salary, but believes Milan will be more competitive with the Croatian on the side.

“If they signed him, it’s because they had Ibrahimovic’s approval,” he said. “He’s the same type of player, both badass, strong and good.

“Then, Ibrahimovic is of a higher level but Mandzukic has done well in his career and will surely bring his winning mentality.

“Ill give you an example: Before [Roberto] Mancini’s arrival, Inter always had a strong team but never won anything. That was because they lacked players with a winning mentality, and two to three players arrived per season.

“If Milan want to win something, it’s good to sign young players, but also players who know how to win and Mandzukic is certainly one of them."
