Official: Cagliari sack Di Francesco

Cagliari have announced the sacking of Eusebio Di Francesco and the return of Stefano Capozucca as the club’s sporting director, while Leonardo Semplici is ready to become the Sardinians' new coach.

Cagliari sit 18th in the Serie A table with 15 points in 23 games. They won their last League game back in November and this morning the club confirmed the sacking of Di Francesco.

“Cagliari Calcio have parted company with Head Coach Eusebio Di Francesco. Also the Club have parted company with the assistant coach Francesco Calzona, the assistants Stefano Romano and Giancarlo Marini, the fitness coach Nicandro Vizoco and the psychologist Gianmaria Palumbo,” the statement reads.

“The Club thanks all of them for their contribution carried out with particular commitment and professionality.”

Semplici has already arrived in Sardinia and is going to be appointed new Cagliari coach.

The Rossoblù have also announced the return of Capozucca as their sporting director.

“Cagliari Calcio announces that, with immediate effect, Stefano Capozucca has been entrusted with the role of Sporting Director of the Club. Pierluigi Carta's work will continue within the Technical Sport Department: he will direct the coordination between the Club and the Sport Area.

“Born in 1955, Capozucca returns to Sardinia: as a Sporting Director of the Club, he achieved an immediate return in Serie A, back in the season 2015-16; the following year the team reached 47 points, which earned them to save themselves with any difficulty. The certainty of being saved was obtained four games before the end of the season, the team reaching finally the 11th place in the table.

“The new Sporting Director will once again be able to make available to the Club his long experience as a sports manager, the temper and pragmatism that have always distinguished him.

“Good luck, Stefano.”
