Fernando Torres praised Gianluigi Buffon and insisted he was not disappointed at being on the bench for Spain-Italy.

“The result is acceptable, especially against a side like Italy,” said the Chelsea striker of their 1-1 draw.

“Buffon interpreted the match well and saved his team. It was the right result, as both teams created several chances to get the win.”

Torres had been expected to start, but was dropped in favour of Cesc Fabregas in a 4-3-3 system without recognisable strikers.

“The important thing is for Spain to do well. We scored thanks to Cesc, so that’s fine. I’m not disappointed. Now we must try to continue playing good football.

“We have to win our next two matches in the group, so we’re in the same situation as the World Cup.”

In South Africa 2010, the Spaniards lost their opener against Switzerland, but recovered to lift the trophy.
