Catania Coach Rolando Maran was furious when his side was denied a clear penalty against Inter. “It was stonewall.”

The Elefantini were still only 1-0 down at San Siro when Papu Gomez was brought down by Fredy Guarin, but the referee waved play on and Inter eventually won 2-0.

“We paid the price for the first real chance we gave Inter, then were in the running for a long time. It’s a shame about the penalty incident, but we held our ground well,” said Maran.

“We used up a lot of energy in the first half and Inter rested on their laurels after the break, closing down the spaces.

“I repeat, it was a stonewall penalty and not judged correctly by the officials. It’s a shame that we lost, then in the final minutes we conceded the natural counter-attacks as we poured forward trying to equalise.”
