Luigi De Canio has thanked Genoa President Enrico Preziosi, despite being sacked by the club eight games into the season.

The 55-year-old was released from his responsibilities this afternoon, having let a two-goal lead slip in the club's 4-2 loss to Roma on Sunday evening.

But the former Lecce man has admitted he leaves no bitterness towards the club, even after saving them from relegation at the end of last term.

“I leave with a clear conscience,” he told reporters. “I would have liked more time, but I want to thank everyone at Genoa.

“We have all worked hard, and the only disappointment is that we did not pick up enough points.”

De Canio will be replaced by Gigi Del Neri, who will be in charge for the away trip to San Siro to face Milan on Saturday.
