Roma curva closed over racist chants

Roma will be forced to close the Curva Sud for one game after racist chanting, while Inter have been fined €50,000.

It is a blow for the Giallorossi, who had already been fined €50,000 last week and given a warning for racist abuse aimed at Milan’s Mario Balotelli.

Despite stepping out on to the field ahead of Roma-Napoli on Sunday wearing anti-racism shirts, a section of the ultras in the Curva Sud were again heard hurling racist abuse at opposition players.

Rather than order an entire game behind closed doors, the Disciplinary Commission has ruled Roma must play their next home match with an empty Curva Sud – the section where the ultras sit.

This will be for the first Serie A match of next season and not this Sunday’s Coppa Italia Final between Roma and Lazio.

Inter were also fined €50,000 today after ultras aimed racist chants at Balotelli, even though he was not participating in their game against Udinese.

The chants emerged after news filtered through that Balotelli had scored in Siena-Milan.
