Italy silenced their critics with the 2-1 win over Mexico in the Confederations Cup on Sunday, says Riccardo Montolivo.

The Azzurri had gone into the tournament on the back of unconvincing draws against the Czech Republic and Haiti.

However, using a new 4-3-2-1 system, they triumphed in their opening game with goals from Andrea Pirlo and Mario Balotelli.

“Today we played the game in a different way, with more aggressiveness and condition,” the Milan midfielder noted.

“Two individual moments clearly made the difference against Mexico, but it was the team's performance as a whole which should be praised.”
