The 36-year-old broke the record for most goals scored at the tournament with 16 and is also the only player to have played in four or more World Cup semi-finals.

The veteran said in a statement: “The win in Brazil was a childhood dream and I am proud and happy to have helped make it happen.

“It was the best thing to close my international experience [at this point].”
