Gianluigi Donnarumma had trials with Napoli, Juventus and Inter, but the 16-year-old goalkeeper “only wanted Milan.”
He made his debut on Sunday in a 2-1 victory over Sassuolo, aged 16 years and eight months, becoming the youngest ever shot-stopper to start his first match in Serie A.
“Sinisa Mihajlovic had courage to bet on my son,” Alfonso Donnarumma told the Corriere del Mezzogiorno newspaper.
“Seeing as he’s an experienced Coach, if he made this decision then it’s because he was convinced of Gianluigi’s talent and form.
“When Domenico Berardi stepped up to take the free kick, I was afraid he’d score – which he did – but Sassuolo didn’t get any other goals.
“I don’t know if my son will remain first choice, as Milan have a great champion in their squad like Diego Lopez.”
He reveals that the goalkeeper could’ve had a very different career path.
“Many clubs had realised my son’s potential. Napoli wanted him, while he had trials with Juventus and Inter. He didn’t go there, because he only wanted Milan at all costs.”
