FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio is relatively pleased with Italy’s draw for Euro 2016. “We avoided Spain and Germany.”

The Azzurri were in Pot 2, which gave them a tougher group than usual, facing Belgium, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland.

“It’s a top level group, but at least we avoided Spain and Germany, who are also teams we’ll play in friendlies next year,” said Tavecchio.

“It’s a top level group, but at least we avoided Spain and Germany, who are also teams we’ll play in friendlies next year,” said Tavecchio.

“The 24 best teams on the continent are here, so it was ridiculous to expect an easy draw. We really want to do well.”

Italy already had problems with Sweden at Euro 2004, getting knocked out after an infamous 2-2 draw between the Scandinavians and ‘cousins’ Denmark.

That was the only result that would qualify both those sides at the expense of the Azzurri.

“Sweden? We don’t do anything that is not fair play.”
