Antonio Cassano slammed former Sampdoria Coach Walter Zenga, as Vincenzo Montella “picks who deserves to play.”

FantAntonio was decisive in a 3-2 Derby della Lanterna victory over Genoa this evening, the opening Serie A game of 2016.

“We deserved to win the derby, though we got a bit complacent on 3-0 and Genoa never say die,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We got a bit too frenetic at the end and made some mistakes, but ultimately we thoroughly deserved this derby.

“It becomes easier for me if the team plays the way it did today. All players of quality need support and it’s all simpler with them working this way.

“Montella brought back enthusiasm, the desire to have fun and let me start on the same level as the others. I arrived here for no particular reason as far as Zenga was concerned, but with Montella those who deserve to play are picked.

“In four days we have a tough game against Juve. We have to enjoy our football, as I think through fun we will get results.

“I love Sampdoria. I came back here for my family, for me, for the club and above all to play. At the age of 33 I want to play. I am convinced that if I’m in good shape physically, I can still make the difference.”

Cassano also spoke to Mediaset Premium and was typically forthright.

"What do I say to those people who said I was finished? That you know nothing about football."
