As it’s the last game before Antonio Conte has to whittle down his 30-man squad to 23 for the tournament, he is using this opportunity to test two players on the verge of being cut.

Daniele De Rossi is struggling with an Achilles tendon problem and his performance will be evaluated carefully in midfield.

Thiago Motta and Riccardo Montolivo are recovering from calf injuries and won’t be risked from the start this evening.

If De Rossi fails to prove his fitness, then Napoli midfielder Jorginho will likely be called up instead.

Another man under the spotlight is Eder, who has scored only one Serie A goal since leaving Sampdoria for Inter in January.

He runs a very big risk of being dropped, but Conte noted he hasn’t yet decided whether to bring four or five strikers to France.

Conte assured over the last few days of training he has been able to find an identity and tactical system for the team, something he failed to do during two years because he spent so little time with the players.

Scotland are chosen as the opponents because they are considered similar to the Republic of Ireland, who are in Italy’s group with Belgium and Sweden.

Although they failed to qualify for Euro 2016, Gordon Strachan’s men have kept three consecutive clean sheets and are strong from set plays.

Italy’s next friendly is against Finland at the Stadio Bentegodi in Verona on June 6.
