Roma have finally completed the signing of defender Mario Rui from Empoli for €9m plus bonuses. “I’ve joined one of the best clubs in the world.”
The player is technically arriving on loan, but the option to buy is mandatory after a certain number of appearances.
“AS Roma is delighted to confirm the signing of Mario Rui Silva Duarte,” read a statement.
“Roma announce that terms have been agreed with Empoli FC for the player to join the club on loan until 30 June 2017.
“Roma will pay Empoli a fixed fee of €3 million, rising by up to €1.5 m in performance-related bonuses.
“The agreement includes a performance-related clause which, if triggered, will mean Roma must make the deal permanent by the start of the 2017-18 season for a fee of €6m.”
The 25-year-old Portuguese left-back spoke to Roma TV after the long-awaited move.
“I’ve joined one of the best clubs in the world so I’m feeling great. The first impressions are very positive. I hope to contribute and help the team to build on the work they did last season.”
He will wear the Number 22 jersey.
