The 30-year-old should finally appease some of the restless fans in the capital, as he represents exactly the type of versatile quality centre-back that Coach Luciano Spalletti needed to bolster his defence.
The player landed in Rome yesterday evening and had his medicals. A statement on Barcelona's official website confirmed the move, which is expected to be a €2m loan with an option to buy for €10m.

“FC Barcelona and AS Roma have reached an agreement for the loan of Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen for the 2016/17 season,” the statement confirms.
“The Italian club contractually agrees that the participation of the player remains active during the loan. The agreement includes an option for Roma to buy the player at the end of the 2016/17 season."
