The Nerazzurri’s pre-season was somewhat chaotic, as Coach Roberto Mancini terminated his contract by mutual consent just 13 days before the Serie A opener.

“I think Mancini did a great job last year,” Thohir told the Corriere dello Sport.

“Now with De Boer we have the same objective: qualify for the Champions League. Of course, it’s premature to say now whether we’ll achieve it, because De Boer has never coached in Italy.

“But then Antonio Conte has never coached in the Premier League and neither had Jurgen Klopp until last term. We hope to start picking up points straight away against Chievo.”

Is the Scudetto possible for this Inter side?

“Obviously Juventus are strong, but that doesn’t mean we are just giving up on the top objective. Napoli and Roma can also potentially push for first place. I repeat, for Inter at the moment the most important thing is to reach the Champions League.”

Thohir also revealed that the Nerazzurri are not finished with their spending spree yet, especially as Joao Mario is still a €45m target from Sporting.

“We won’t buy as many players as in past years, but we will certainly reinforce the squad with at least another one or two players.

“Along with Suning, we bought Antonio Candreva.

“The objective is to make the team stronger and build a solid squad, not a dream team. It’s with solid teams you win matches.”
