The Blucerchiati saw their five-round unbeaten run come to an end with the first home defeat since September.

“We must try to be objective and recognise Lazio are a very strong side who came here to play with great character,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“Samp played the usual generous game and tried everything to get it back on track. Evidently my team has it in its DNA to fight back, but I’d prefer it if we weren’t always trailing in the first place.”

The offside trap worked repeatedly in the first half, but started to break down as time wore on.

“I knew Ciro Immobile would try to run in behind Torreira, so we needed to be quick. We read some situations a little slowly. Conceding the second goal could’ve killed us off, but the team held out and never gave up.”
