Allegri: 'Milan are not breaking away'

Massimiliano Allegri insists Milan “are not breaking away” after opening up a four-point gap at the top of the table. “We're in an emergency situation.”

The Serie A leaders battled to see off Cesena 2-0 this evening after losing Alessandro Nesta and Gennaro Gattuso on top of an already-impressive injury list.

“We are not breaking away, but it is a nice victory,” said the Coach. “We're in an emergency situation, but the team played well, except for the opening 20 minutes.

“I'd say the win was deserved. We created many scoring opportunities and the three forwards combined well, but were helped by a midfield that always tried to get the ball up to them quickly.”

There is no respite for the Rossoneri, who face Sampdoria in the Coppa Italia quarter-final on Wednesday.

“We hope to have recovered one or two midfielders by then,” continued Allegri, who had to push Thiago Silva into that position.

“Nesta's shoulder popped out of joint and tomorrow we will know with greater precision the extent of the injury.

“Mario Yepes had a good game, as did Sokratis Papastathopoulos, while Thiago Silva can comfortably play central midfield thanks to his good feet.”

This match represented Antonio Cassano's first Serie A start for the club after a series of substitute appearances and he had a hand in the opening goal.

“Cassano looked good and did some important things. I thought after Thursday's Coppa game that he would drop in his intensity levels, but he proved me wrong there.”

The tactician also had a word for new signing Urby Emanuelson, who was in the stands following his transfer from Ajax.

“He is a midfielder with great technique and is very dynamic. He will be extremely useful for us.”
