Only in Serie A: FKA Eriberto

Chievo winger Eriberto shocked the football world in 2002 when confessing he’d lied about his age, name and entire identity, as Luciano Siqueira was four years older…

Words: Susy Campanale

Eriberto Da Conceicao Silva was born on January 21, 1979, joining Bologna at the age of 19 in 1998 and becoming a crucial part of Chievo’s fairy-tale rise to the top from promotion to fifth place in Serie A. Luciano Siqueira was born on December 3, 1975 and had been on the verge of a big money transfer to Lazio in 2002 when he had a crisis of conscience and felt the desperate need to confess: Eriberto and Luciano were the same person.

Sorrentino deserved better

The veteran shot-stopper put an end to his professional career earlier this year, so Vilizar Yakimov looks back at Stefano Sorrentino’s under-appreciated story.

Little, if any, attention was paid from both fans and media when Stefano Sorrentino announced his retirement back in January after more than 20 years in the professional game.

At first glance, this only seemed normal, as the 41-year-old goalkeeper had never played for a top team and had spent his best years at Serie A minnows Chievo. Yet, despite defending their goal for years, the Flying Donkeys practically forced him into retirement, as he was released against his will after their relegation to Serie B.

Think you know your Capocannoniere from your catenaccio? Test your Serie A knowledge with Football Italia’s calcio quiz, 2001-02 edition!

Another bout of last round drama was in store for the 2001-02 season as three teams went into the final day with a chance of claiming the Scudetto. Juventus eventually came out on top, beating champions Roma and Inter to the trophy, the Old Lady’s first title since 1997-98.

But Chievo were arguably the story of the season, as the Flying Donkeys took Serie A by storm. They led the table for six rounds before falling away – but still claimed a creditable fifth place in their debut Serie A campaign.

Milan don't like headers

Milan have only scored two headed goals this season, one of the worst records of any side in Serie A this season.

The two goals, scored by Hakan Calhanoglu against Brescia and Zlatan Ibrahimovic against Inter in the derby, represent the sum total of the Rossoneri’s goals via the head this term.

In fact, over the last four years, Milan sit 15th in the ranking of teams scoring with their heads, with only 23 goals from 139 games.
