Ranieri: 'Impossible to play football'

Claudio Ranieri blamed the state of the Bentegodi pitch for Roma's chaotic 2-2 draw with Chievo. “It was like playing beach soccer.”

The conditions were decisive in the end, as the final goal came about when Rodrigo Taddei made a foul throw. From that move, the Flying Donkeys then created their strike.

“The line from the rugby pitch here was visible, but nobody noticed. I did and so did the fourth official, so I was shouting for Taddei to come back,” explained the Coach.

Pioli: 'Pitch the same for both sides'

Stefano Pioli insists both Chievo and Roma were equally prepared for the dreadful playing field in Verona.

Recent rain and snow had left the pitch covered in mud at the Bentegodi, even when sand was put down to soak up the moisture.

“Roma knew the state of the pitch would take away from their quality and passing movement, so they fielded a more muscular side,” pointed out Pioli after that 2-2 draw.

“We tried to counter them ball for ball. Roma did better in the first half, we were clearly the stronger side in the second.

Juan to miss trip to Verona

Roma will be without their Brazil international centre-back Juan for Saturday's trip to Chievo because of personal problems.

The 31-year-old was not on the plane when Roma left Fiumicino airport this afternoon.

It remains to be seen whether Juan returns in time for Roma's Champions League clash with Cluj on Wednesday.

Roma have a few issues in defence as John-Arne Riise has also been ruled out for two weeks.

Roma will be a tough test, says Pioli

Chievo boss Stefano Pioli expects Roma to present his side with a tough test when they meet on Saturday.

The 45-year-old tactician is mindful that his opponents are looking to bounce back after they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Palermo last weekend.

"I believe that Roma are the Italian team with the best technical ability," Pioli said.

"Roma have great players available to them and what's more they are coming off a bad defeat against Palermo, so it will be even tougher for us."
