Inter and Tottenham target Albert Gudmundsson admitted he learnt about Genoa from ‘a quick Google’ just before his flight to Italy and flirted with the Premier League ahead of the summer.

The 26-year-old Icelandic forward joined the Ligurian outfit from AZ Alkmaar back in January 2022 in a deal worth just €1.5m, a bargain in hindsight. After a slightly slow start, he started to emerge and shine on the main stage this term.

Gudmundsson has scored 15 goals and provided four assists in 33 appearances this season, attracting the attention of a number of top clubs across Europe including Inter, Juventus and Tottenham, setting up an exciting summer transfer window for the Icelandic ace.

Gudmundsson on googling Genoa and Premier League love

Speaking to The Telegraph, Gudmundsson first admitted his lack of knowledge about Genoa prior to his January 2022 move.

“I didn’t have much time to do any research about the coach or club so did a quick Google before my flight was leaving in an hour and said ‘f**k it’ let’s jump at it.”

The 26-year-old Icelandic forward discussed his impressive season in Serie A and growth over the last two years.

“I was always waiting for the moment and this season it has come out of me. I’m very happy with what I’ve seen so far this season. I also had good stats last season in Serie B, and it gave me some confidence for this season.

“I knew I always had the qualities, good finishing, good final pass, good set-pieces. Now I feel it is finally coming out. I’m not sure what made it come out, maybe just age, maturity and getting to know the league better.”

Finally, Gudmundsson spoke about the transfer market rumours and his interest in the Premier League.

“I really want to test myself at the highest level possible. I feel good here and still under contract here at Genoa and want to finish the season and see what happens but obviously as a player and lover of football, I’ve dreamt of playing at the highest level. Always, that is my ambition.

“Since I was a kid, I always thought about playing in the Premier League, so obviously it is something I definitely want to try.”
