Final Four option for UEFA?

According to reports in Spain, UEFA are considering a Final Four style tournament in Istanbul and Gdansk for the Champions League and Europa League.

Time is running out to complete the various club tournaments, even if Euro 2020 is postponed this summer.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced all football to be shut down in Europe’s major leagues and it’s not yet clear when they will be able to resume.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, UEFA will propose a new structure to get the Champions League and Europa League finished more quickly.

Serie A clubs could lose 700m

Serie A clubs could lose up to €700m if the remainder of the season cannot be concluded, according to La Repubblica.

The league has been suspended in the midst of the Coronavirus with between 12 and 13 games remaining, depending on the team.

At present, the proposal is to restart the season on May 2, and conclude it on June 30.

However no decision can be made until UEFA hold their critical summit on Tuesday, which will decide the fate of Euro 2020 and how best to finish the Champions League and Europa League competitions.

Gravina: 'Leagues priority over Euro 2020'

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina insists “Euro 2020 has to be postponed” due to the Coronavirus pandemic, as “the priority is concluding the leagues.”

The decision to call off Euro 2020 seems inevitable on Tuesday when UEFA hold an emergency meeting, as players have tested positive in several different countries, while the top five continental leagues have been suspended.

UEFA to change European competition format

UEFA are expected to hold a critical meeting on Tuesday to discuss how to proceed with the Champions League and Europa League, and are reportedly contemplating changing the quarter final and semi final ties to one-legged affairs.

Football, and the world of sport, has been thrown into chaos due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

As of yesterday, all of the major football leagues have been suspended until April 3, and UEFA also announced the postponement of their competitions.

Official: Bundesliga suspended

The German FA have now officially suspended all of its competitions, effective immediately, due to the Coronavirus.

The Bundesliga was the only remaining league from the big five yet to be suspended.

The plan was to play this weekend’s games behind closed doors, and suspend the league from Monday.

However with cases of the Coronavirus rising all over Europe, the DFL has taken the decision to suspend the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, effective immediately.

The Coronavirus' effect on football

As the Coronavirus, or COVID-19 as it’s also known, spreads rapidly across Europe, football, and sport, is now coming to a standstill.

Serie A was the first major league to be affected by the virus, with games being postponed, rearranged, cancelled further, played behind closed doors, and then the league was finally suspended earlier this week.

As it stands, Juventus, Lazio, Inter and Atalanta would all qualify for next season’s Champions League, with Roma and Napoli claiming Europa League spots. Lecce, SPAL and Brescia would be relegated to Serie B.

Serie A to resume on May 3?

Serie A will not resume until May 3 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, claim reports, using the time gained by the cancellation of Euro 2020 to finish the season.

Multiple sources including L’Equipe suggested today that UEFA would inevitably postpone the European Championships, which were due to kick off on June 12.

The opening game would’ve been in Rome between Italy and Turkey.

South American World Cup qualifiers suspended

Serie A players will not be called to travel to South America this month, as the World Cup qualifiers have been postponed, along with the Copa Libertadores games.

It was not clear how players currently in Europe would be treated when travelling for international duty, particularly those from the hardest-hit areas by the Coronavirus such as Italy and Spain.

“Following consultation with CONMEBOL, FIFA has decided to postpone the upcoming South American qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 as follows,” read a statement.

FIFPro call for health protection

FIFPro note increased concerns” as professional players test positive for Coronavirus, calling for UEFA to consider “health protection, financial support mechanisms and consolidated future planning with regards to the football calendar.”

There have now been two Serie A players who have contracted Coronavirus, Juventus defender Daniele Rugani and Sampdoria striker Manolo Gabbiadini.

Report: Euro 2020 delayed to 2021

UEFA are expected to suspend the Champions League and Europa League, postponing Euro 2020 for a year, but only after a meeting on March 17, claim L’Equipe.

It was announced today that UEFA were organising a summit via videoconference with representatives of the 55 members associations, boards of the European Club Association, European Leagues and FIFPro to discuss “European football’s response to the Coronavirus outbreak.
