Official: Italy-Spain Europa League games suspended

UEFA have officially suspended the Europa League Round of 16 first leg games between Sevilla-Roma and Inter-Getafe due to the Coronavirus.

The games looked in serious doubt as the Spanish government cancelled all flights to and from Italy in an effort to contain the Coronavirus in Spain.

Atalanta earn over €50m

Atalanta’s run to the quarter-final of the Champions League has seen the club earn over €50m in prize money.

La Dea swept aside Valencia in last night’s second leg 8-4 on aggregate to become the sixth side from Serie A to reach the last eight of the competition.

Financial website Calcio e Finanza crunched the numbers on the Bergamo side’s success, and it revealed that the club, as it stands, will receive just over €50m from UEFA.

UEFA won't delay Euro 2020

According to Spanish newspaper AS, UEFA are continuing to reject growing calls to postpone Euro 2020 or even delay it by a year due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Italy is so far the worst affected nation outside of China, but the illness is spreading rapidly in the rest of Europe and the United States.

With Serie A suspended until April 3, news that French, Spanish, Portuguese and German games will also be played behind closed doors, there are growing concerns this season won’t be able to finish on time.

UEFA exclude Italian referees

Italian referees have been excluded from officiating in the next games of the Champions League and Europa League, due to the Coronavirus.

Daniele Orsato oversaw the Champions League Round of 16 first leg clash between Real Madrid and Manchester City last week.

Whilst in the Europa League Round of 32, Marco Guida took charge of Espanyol’s first leg game vs Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Davide Massa meanwhile officiated Arsenal’s first leg clash with Greek side Olympiakos.

UEFA: 'No cancellation for now'

President Aleksander Ceferin has revealed that UEFA are “following the decisions” of the “individual states” amid rumours about postponing Juventus-Lyon.

The match should be held at the Allianz Stadium on March 17, but the coronavirus outbreak has put sporting events at risk of getting cancelled and postponed to a later date.

The Champions League is on exception and the President Ceferin has revealed that the tournaments governing body will follow the guidelines from the respective countries involved.

Only cameramen allowed for Inter-Ludogrets

Only cameramen will be allowed into San Siro for Inter’s clash with Ludogrets, with journalists also banned due to the Coronavirus.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the decision was made between the two clubs and UEFA.

The game was officially announced to be held behind closed doors several days ago, however as a precautionary measure, more steps have been taken.

Guardiola: 'I won't leave Man City'

Pep Guardiola has shot down reports he is preparing a summer move to Juventus after Manchester City’s European ban. “This is my club and I will be here, no matter what.”

When news emerged that Manchester City had been given a two-season ban from European competition as a result of Financial Fair Play violations, it was reported that Juve were ready to swoop for the tactician.

Guardiola spoke to BBC Sport after their 2-0 Premier League victory over West Ham United this evening.

Europa League last 32 referees

UEFA have announced the referees for this week’s Europa League fixtures, where Georgi Kabakov will oversee Roma-Gent and Carlos del Cerro Grande will officiate Ludogorets-Inter.

The Giallorossi and the Nerazzurri prepare for their first legs in the last 32 of the Europa League this Thursday, when Inter travel to Bulgaria and Roma will host Belgian KAA Gent.

The Bulgarian match official Kabakov prepares to lead the teams out of the tunnel at the Olimpico this Thursday and will bring experience from the Champions League earlier this term.

Juventus favourites for Guardiola

With Manchester City excluded from Europe for two years, Pep Guardiola could move on with Juventus, PSG and Bayern Munich all potential destinations.

UEFA announced on Friday that Manchester City had been fined €30m and banned from taking part in the Champions League or Europa League for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 campaigns after years of Financial Fair Play violations.

Man City banned from Champions League

UEFA announced they have banned Manchester City from Europe for the next two seasons and fined them €30m for Financial Fair Play violations.

This is the latest step in UEFA’s attempts to clamp down on flagrant violations of the FFP rules and will act as a warning to other clubs.

Whereas Milan were excluded from European competition in the 2019/20 season, that was an agreement reached between the club and UEFA to resolve years of mismanagement and start again with a clean slate.
