Genoa did not apply for UEFA licence

Genoa decided not to apply for a 2020-21 UEFA licence, according to reports, so they were not rejected.

It was announced today that 16 out of 20 Serie A clubs had been granted the UEFA licence for next season, all except for Genoa, Brescia, Lecce and SPAL.

While many of them have stadium issues, so being in the bottom four assume they won’t need a licence to play in European competition, Genoa do share the Stadio Luigi Ferraris with Sampdoria.

UEFA licences to 16 Serie A clubs

A UEFA licence for 2020-21 has been granted to 16 out of 20 Serie A clubs, with Brescia, SPAL, Lecce and Genoa missing out.

The clubs can lodge an appeal within five days of the verdict.

As Atalanta’s Gewiss Stadium is still undergoing restructuring work, they have again chosen a different arena as their official base, although this can change as the work progresses.

They have picked the Mapei Stadium in Reggio-Emilia, the home of Sassuolo, although Atalanta played their Champions League games for this season at San Siro in Milan.

OFFICIAL: Five subs in Serie A

The FIGC has announced that Serie A clubs can make up to five substitutions during matches for the rest of this season.

The move comes as part of a temporarily new ruling by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), designed to help sides resume their respective campaigns following the coronavirus lockdown.

However, a statement released by the FIGC added teams were still limited to three intervals for making substitutions per game, excluding half-time.

Inter subs among Serie A's worst

Inter’s substitutes have scored just one Serie A goal off the bench this season, ranking only better than SPAL in that regard.

That goal was scored by Alessandro Bastoni, who replaced Diego Godin at Lecce in January and netted the equaliser in a 1-1 draw.

The only team to have fared worse are SPAL, whose substitutes have yet to score during a league match in 2019-20.

In contrast, at the other end of the spectrum, Atalanta lead the way on 14 goals, five clear of Verona in second place and eight of table-toppers Juventus.

Serie A clubs excluded if protocol breached?

The FIGC is reportedly threatening to exclude from Serie A any club that does not respect the medical protocol for COVID-19.

According to Sport Mediaset, Sky Sport Italia and others, the proposal will be discussed at a meeting on Monday.

It would give the Federation the authority to throw a club out of the top flight for breaking the rules.

The pandemic curve is falling significantly every day, prompting many teams and their medical staff to call for a relaxing of the quarantine guidance.
