De Canio: 'Forza Genoa!'

Lecce have climbed out of the relegation zone, but it all depends on the derby tonight. “I'm cheering on Genoa,” said Gigi De Canio.

The last-gasp 2-1 win over Napoli allowed the Salentini to leapfrog Sampdoria, who are in action at 19.45 UK time.

“I will watch tonight's game and I'm cheering on Genoa,” smiled the Coach.

“Our safety has to be linked in with Samp's results. If by the end of this weekend we are still on top of Sampdoria, then our fate is in our hands.

Line-ups: Derby della Lanterna

Sampdoria need a victory to escape the relegation zone, but local rivals Genoa have no intention of making it easy for them.

The Blucerchiati slipped into the bottom three after this afternoon's results and must pick up points in the 19.45 UK time kick-off.

Fans aren't too hopeful, as many of the Samp tickets have not been sold for the Derby della Madonnina.

Gianluca Curci is not 100 per cent fit, so Junior Da Costa starts between the posts, while Jonathan Biabiany and Nicola Pozzi are the strikers.

Ballardini and Boselli enjoy derby win

Davide Ballardini and Mauro Boselli are “super-happy” at beating Sampdoria in a result the Genoa fans desperately wanted.

The rivalry in the Derby della Lanterna was cranked up a notch this evening, as the 2-1 win puts Samp in the relegation zone.

“It was not a great derby in football terms, as we were both too tense,” said the Coach after a 97th-minute winner.

“Above all in the second half there was too much tension and haste, so we didn't play the way we wanted to.

Ballardini's Genoa under lockdown

Genoa are treating the Derby della Lanterna like a Scudetto decider, as Davide Ballardini has locked the team away to prepare.

The Grifone are already comfortably mid-table and have nothing to play for but pride, while Sampdoria are just one point clear of the relegation zone.

Coach Ballardini is keeping the levels of concentration as high as possible for the Sunday night kick-off.

He has decided not to speak to the media and locked the squad away by training behind closed doors today.

'Fiorentina want Parolo'

Cesena star Marco Parolo “is of interest to Fiorentina, Genoa and Palermo,” said the club's technical director.

The 26-year-old midfielder has been one of the break-out figures in Serie A this season, earning his first Italy cap.

“I know that Fiorentina are interested in Parolo, but at the moment we have not received any formal offers,” said Cesena director Lorenzo Minotti.

“There are also other clubs looking at Parolo, like Genoa and Palermo.”

Demotion Derby

The 82nd Derby della Lanterna finds both Genoa and Sampdoria in bad shape, but that won't stop them producing a scintillating spectacle. Scott Fleming writes

There's a sense of symmetry to the latest edition of the Derby della Lanterna. Two underachieving clubs, two unpopular Presidents, two Coaches living on borrowed time and two squads filled with the rotten fruit of ill considered transfer campaigns.

All the evidence suggests that you might be better off breaking out the stamp collection if you're seeking entertainment on Sunday night, yet there's an argument to be made that the 82nd meeting of Genoa and Sampdoria might be the best yet. Why? Because it could be the last for a long time.

Malesani wanted by Genoa

Genoa are hoping to tempt Coach Alberto Malesani away from Bologna at the end of this season.

The Marassi outfit are expected to show Davide Ballardini the door once the campaign comes to an end and Malesani is at the top of the club's wish-list.

Despite being linked with Siena's Antonio Conte and former Roma boss Claudio Ranieri, it's understood that Malesani is the preferred choice of chief Enrico Preziosi.

Zenit failed in Criscito bid

Zenit failed in a bid to sign Genoa's Domenico Criscito at the start of this year, the player's agent has revealed.

"Zenit made an offer during the January transfer window," Andrea D'Amico told TMW. "They asked for him on loan."

The left-back is a wanted man and has been linked with numerous sides since Genoa took full ownership of his rights last summer.

Ballardini doesn't fear Napoli

Genoa Coach Davide Ballardini is fired up for tonight's meeting with Napoli. “We are not afraid of anyone.”

The Grifone are comfortably mid-table and have shown in recent weeks they're not taking their foot off the gas, having beaten relegation battlers Brescia and Lecce.

“We are not afraid of anyone, but do have great respect. There are many difficulties, but we are ready for them,” said Ballardini ahead of tonight's 19.45 UK time kick-off.

Line-ups: Mazzarri goes for experience

Napoli have opted for the experience of Christian Maggio and Walter Gargano when welcoming Genoa to the San Paolo this evening.

The Vesuviani need a victory to keep up with second-placed Inter and have essentially a full squad for this game.

Only Gianluca Grava is still on the treatment table, so Maggio, Michele Pazienza and Salvatore Aronica were chosen ahead of Juan Zuniga, Hasan Yebda and Victor Ruiz.

As always, the ‘Three Tenors' Marek Hamsik, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani start in attack.
