Rejuvenation of Genoa

Football Italia Chief Correspondent Richard Hall believes Genoa have turned a corner and Aurelio Andreazzoli can revive this great club.

In years gone by, Genoa would not have been able to come back against Roma. In seasons past, they would not have been able to hold out to beat Fiorentina, but this team is different. With a new Coach, a good summer transfer window and a playing style that is impressive, albeit early in its evolution, there are reasons for the fans to be excited. There will be bumps along the way, but nobody would put them among the relegation candidates. This could be an entertaining campaign, despite the club being up for sale.

Revealed: Serie A's highest earners

Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo is Serie A’s runaway highest earner on €31m a season, with Matthijs de Ligt and Romelu Lukaku already second and third.

An investigation by Gazzetta dello Sport discovered Serie A was spending €1.36bn on gross salaries – the most in the League’s history.

That is chiefly down to Ronaldo’s extravagant income of almost €600,000 a week and Juve’s wage bill of €294m – more than double that of nearest challengers Inter (€139m).

Rossi: Waiting for a call

Former Fiorentina and Italy star Giuseppe Rossi has insisted that he is ready to play regular football again. “I’m waiting for a call.”

Rossi has seven goals in 30 caps for Italy and scored over 100 times for Villarreal and Fiorentina.

However, it seems no-one is prepared to take a chance on the forward’s fitness, given his five ACL injuries in the last eight years.

“I’ve felt good for a long time,” the 32-year-old told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Andreazzoli calms Gasp comparisons

Genoa Coach Aurelio Andreazzoli said it’s “an honour” to be compared to Gian Piero Gasperini, but it’s too early for such praise.

Gasp had two different spells on the Genoa bench and remains a fan hero, even after taking Atalanta to their first ever Champions League spot.

Andreazzoli just arrived from Empoli and was asked whether he represented Gasperini’s heir.

“I am honoured by the comparison, as I admire Gasperini a great deal and know all he did for this club,” Andreazzoli told Sky Sport Italia.

Nicchi: 'Refs can't stop play for racism'

Referees’ Association President Marcello Nicchi insists those responsible for racist abuse should be “thrown in jail,” but it is not up to the official.

While in France this season, referees have stopped play several times for racist and homophobic chants, in Italy the debate rages on after Inter forward Romelu Lukaku was racially abused by Cagliari fans.
