How Roma revitalised Smalling

There’s no doubt Chris Smalling has been transformed by his Roma experience, so Lee Bushe analyses why he’s so much stronger than at Manchester United.

Prior to his revitalisation at Roma, Chris Smalling was regarded as deadwood by Manchester United. A defender who - despite occasional flashes of brilliance - was never consistent enough to be considered a worthy successor to Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic. He was symbolic of how stale United had gotten, having spent nine years with the club without really achieving anything of note.

Why Juventus could sacrifice Dybala

Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t just signed for his football skills, but also what he brought to the club, and Kaustubh Pandey warns Paulo Dybala can’t match that.

It has become common knowledge to many that Juventus could sell Cristiano Ronaldo or Paulo Dybala this summer. This is a case of moving on one of the best players of this generation or selling perhaps their best performer in the 2019-20 season. That is always going to be easier said than done.

Conte's Inter is here

It’s been a decade since Inter fans witnessed a team in a European Final, but above all a side with such organisation, hunger and laser focus to thrash Shakhtar Donetsk 5-0, writes Richard Hall.

It really is a new era. Physically, tactically and mentally, everything went right for Inter as they cruised past Shakhtar Donetsk 5-0 in the Europa League semi-final. The Nerazzurri are the first Italian club to reach the Europa League Final since Parma in 1999, when it was still the UEFA Cup and a young Gigi Buffon was in goal, and they are determined to go on and win the competition.

Veron sees Alexis similarities

Juan Sebastian Veron sees similarities between his career and that of Alexis Sanchez. ‘I was at my best in Italy and I think that’s true of Alexis Sanchez too.’

Both players came through Manchester United, but found their South American flair worked better in a Serie A context.

Man Utd consider Douglas Costa

Manchester United are considering a bid for Juventus winger Douglas Costa, claim Sky Sport Italia, but are concerned by his injury record.

The Brazilian turns 30 next month and is one of the main figures thought to be on sale this summer amid another squad revamp in Turin under new coach Andrea Pirlo.

His contract with Juve runs to 2022 and he was purchased from Bayern Munich in 2017 for €46m.

According to Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Manchester United are currently evaluating the pros and cons of making a genuine offer.

Garcia: 'Italian fitness coach key for Lyon'

Lyon coach Rudi Garcia credited their ‘Italian fitness coach’ Paolo Rongoni for victories over Juventus and Manchester City in the Champions League.

The pair met when Garcia was in charge of Roma in 2014-15, following him to Olympique Marseille from 2016-19 and then Lyon in October last year.

Olympique Lyonnais are the shock Champions League semi-finalists after beating Juve and Manchester City, but Garcia tipped his hat to Rongoni during his post-match interview with Sky Sport Italia.

Gabriel picks between Napoli and Arsenal

Lille have reportedly accepted offers from Napoli and Arsenal for Gabriel, so now it’s up to the defender to make a decision.

Although Everton and Manchester United were also mentioned, le10sport.com in France insist it’s a two-horse race between Napoli and Arsenal.

Smalling only wants Roma

While rumours in England suggest Manchester United are offering him to Newcastle and Fulham, along with Inter, it’s reported Chris Smalling only wants Roma.

The asking price of €25m could not be met by Roma in their current state, but once the takeover of the club is complete next week, new patron Dan Friedkin should have the extra investment.

On top of that, the Corriere dello Sport and Sportitalia are confident Smalling only wants Roma and is prepared to slash his wages in order to get the deal through.
