Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was left in tears at full-time of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Borussia Dortmund, which eliminated the Parisians from the competition after a 2-0 aggregate defeat.

Sky Sport Italia’s pitchside reporters, and Gianluca Di Marzio reporting from the stadium, confirmed that Donnarumma left the pitch feeling deeply emotional, and that he had been spotted in tears as he made his way towards the dressing rooms.

The 2023-24 campaign has been the furthest that Donnarumma has gone in the Champions League in his career, having been knocked out at the round of 16 stage twice with PSG. With Milan, he had only featured in the Europa League.

PSG and Donnarumma were beaten 1-0 twice over two legs for a 2-0 aggregate score. They had hit the woodwork six times over the two matches, including four in the second half of the return fixture.

It was Mats Hummels who delivered the crucial blow on the night, thumping a header home from a Julian Brandt corner in the 50th minute.

It was another German with the goal in the first leg, as striker Niklas Fulkrug pounced on a long ball over the top from Nico Schlotterbeck.

Dortmund will now go on to face either Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid or Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the final. That semi-final will be settled on Wednesday night, with the scores currently tied at 2-2.
