Zappacosta: 'Italy jeers justified'

Davide Zappacosta acknowledges the fans were “justified” in jeering Italy off the pitch after their 1-1 draw with Macedonia.

The Azzurri now need a point in Albania on Monday to be sure of a place in the World Cup play-offs, although that could be granted today if Bosnia don’t beat Belgium.

“When you concede a goal, it means something didn’t work,” Chelsea wing-back Zappacosta told TMW Radio.

Italy await play-offs place

Italy are not yet guaranteed a spot in the 2018 World Cup play-offs, let alone the status of seeds in the draw, so could be paired with Portugal or Croatia.

The Azzurri were held to a 1-1 draw by Macedonia in Turin on Friday evening, as Spain crushed Albania 3-0 to lock down first place in their group.

Only the best eight runners-up make it into the play-offs, which will be played next month over two legs.

Ventura: 'Italy struggle in play-offs'

Giampiero Ventura again slammed the door on Jorginho, but confessed “if Italy play like in the second half with Macedonia, we’ll struggle in the play-offs.”

The Azzurri had only previously dropped points in their head-to-heads with Spain, but were pegged back 1-1 at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino.

When Giorgio Chiellini’s tap-in was cancelled out by Aleksandar Trajkovski, the Nazionale was jeered off the field in Ventura’s old stadium.

Angelovski: 'Macedonia deserved draw'

Macedonia Coach Igor Angelovski trusts they “deserved at least a point” over the two very tight games against Italy.

Giorgio Chiellini had finally broken down the Macedonian defence just before half-time, but substitute Aleksandar Trajkovski snatched a late equaliser in Turin.

Ventura must take the blame

Italy unveiled a new badge and kit against Macedonia, but Adam Digby saw the same old Coach and uninspired performance.

A draw. With Macedonia. At home. If ever a result summed up Italy during Giampiero Ventura’s tenure, it was this: the Azzurri held to a disappointing 1-1 stalemate by a team they should have brushed aside comfortably. The performance was every bit as uninspiring as the final score would indicate, and the 69-year-old can expect to be completely lambasted by the national and international media alike in the coming days.

Parolo: 'Azzurri stretched out'

Marco Parolo insists Italy’s first half against Macedonia was acceptable, but after the break “we were more stretched out.”

Giorgio Chiellini’s tap-in just before the break was cancelled out by Aleksandar Trajkovski in a 1-1 draw.

“It was a good first half, we were unable to repeat the performance in the second half, were more stretched out and Macedonia found spaces between the lines.

Buffon: 'Italy psychological shift'

Gigi Buffon admits Italy lost confidence, momentum and enjoyment after a 1-1 draw with Macedonia. “We need a psychological shift.”

Giorgio Chiellini’s header was cancelled out by Palermo forward Aleksandar Trajkovski in Turin, the first time the Azzurri have dropped points in this World Cup qualifying group apart from the head-to-heads with Spain.

Pandev: 'Italy nothing to play for'

Genoa and Macedonia striker Goran Pandev “could tell Italy had nothing to play for” in the 1-1 World Cup qualifier draw.

His assist sent Palermo winger Aleksandar Trajkovski through for the equaliser in Turin after the Giorgio Chiellini opener.

“I thought we defended well and made the most of a counter-attack. That’s how you need to play against the big teams, otherwise you concede three or four and can’t get back on track,” Pandev told Rai Sport.

Andrea Barzagli reveals he had a muscular problem and acknowledges Italy put in “a bad performance” with Macedonia.

Giorgio Chiellini’s first half tap-in was cancelled out by substitute Aleksandar Trajkovski in a 1-1 draw.

Chiellini: 'Italy lost enthusiasm'

Giorgio Chiellini concedes Italy fans had every reason to jeer after a 1-1 draw with Macedonia. “Defeat to Spain sapped our enthusiasm.”

The Azzurri had won every game in the group until now, save for the draw and defeat to Spain.

“Once we had broken the deadlock, we should’ve controlled it a bit better, as Macedonia weren’t remotely dangerous for 75 minutes. We should’ve had it under control,” the goalscorer told Rai Sport.
