CTS: 'Protocol depends on COVID-19'

A member of the CTS (scientific technical committee) that helped design the medical protocol said ‘it’s possible’ they could loosen restrictions, but only if the COVID-19 pandemic slows.

The CTS twice rejected the version presented by the FIGC, only allowing group training to resume from May 18 if the entire group goes into 15-day quarantine when there’s a positive test and club medics are held liable for any coronavirus cases.

Clubs demand protocol changes

Protests are growing against the medical protocol, which is due to start from Monday, as clubs and players call the Lega Serie A to demand changes from the Government.

A showdown is in the offing and time is running out, as group training is meant to start from May 18, with an idea to play Serie A games from June 13.

However, the medical protocol agreed with the FIGC this week has been slammed from all quarters as anything from impractical to impossible.

Players and agents demand protocol 'clarity'

The Italian Players’ Association and Agents’ Association released statements demanding ‘clarity’ on the medical protocol to resume Serie A, again protesting the automatic quarantine of an entire squad.

The protocol was agreed between the FIGC, Lega Serie A and the Government’s technical committee (CTS), allowing group training to begin from May 18 and in theory Serie A matches from June 13.

Udinese: 'Take responsibility off clubs'

Udinese and Watford patron Gianpaolo Pozzo has written to the Italian Minister for Sport asking for ‘ad hoc legislation to take some of the responsibility’ off clubs and medics.

The medical protocol was agreed with the Lega Serie A and Government today, so group training can start on Monday, with a plan to begin games from June 13.

However, some issues remain with the protocol, as the club medic would be considered liable if any player tested positive for COVID-19.

Vincenzo Spadafora has confirmed that Serie A clubs can resume training from May 18 after the FIGC made the necessary adjustments to its health protocol.

Spadafora said earlier this week that only minor changes were needed to the FIGC’s protocol but cast doubt on football’s return when he said it could only happen ‘in complete safety’.

Virologist: 'Why not let fans in?'

An Italian virologist points out if audiences are allowed in open-air concerts or theatres, ‘there’s no reason why football fans shouldn’t be treated the same way.’

While group training should be able to resume from Monday – if the medical protocol can be agreed – the issue of seeing supporters in the stands is a very long way off clarification.
