Serie A row over Christmas break

Serie A goes on its Christmas break as a row erupts on whether to scrap the extended time off in 2017.

There are no more games until January 7, whereas the Premier League continues throughout the holidays.

Lega Serie A President Maurizio Beretta has proposed playing matches not only on Boxing Day, but also on neutral turf abroad.

“We cannot think that Italian football will remain inside the domestic confines,” he told the Corriere della Sera.

‘Pellegri good news for Italy’

Italy legend Gianni Rivera claims 15-year-old Pietro Pellegri “is ready” and that his breakthrough “is really good news” for the country’s youth development.

Pellegri became Serie A’s youngest-ever player on Thursday during Genoa’s 1-0 defeat to Torino, the striker aged just 15 years and 280 days, and Rivera is hoping the teenager sets a precedent in Italy.

With a shortened Serie A programme this week due to the Supercoppa, Dave Taylor selects his best XI from Round 18.

The Slovenian needed to be at the top of his game in the first half against Lazio and crucially stopped two fierce efforts from Ciro Immobile. Later in the second half, he had to be at his very best again when Keita Balde Diao tested him with a low drive at the base of the near post.

Galliani: ‘Play Serie A abroad’

Adriano Galliani believes “we have to play a few Serie A rounds abroad” in the future.

The Milan CEO is in Doha for the Supercoppa Italiana, and believes that even League matches should be played abroad.

“Even if Italian football is no longer the best in the world, Italian excellence remains,” Galliani told Mediaset.

“It [Italian football] has to be known, we have to play a few rounds of the League abroad. In addition, when we sell the next television rights we have to be clear about encryption.

Ventura: ‘Best Italy yet to come’

Giampiero Ventura wants to “go to the World Cup and win it” and promises his best Italy is “yet to come”.

The Azzurri are joint-top of Group G as they seek to win a place in Russia, but will have to beat Spain to top-spot if they’re to get there automatically.

“I hope Italy can go to the World Cup and win it,” Ventura told reporters at Coverciano today.

“That’s our goal and we hope to achieve it with a group of players who are not just passing through, but who will become a bedrock for the future.

Milan: Bacca in, Mati out

Milan welcome back Carlos Bacca for Saturday’s clash with Atalanta in Serie A, but Matias Fernandez misses out with a knee injury.

Bacca has missed Milan’s last three games with muscle fatigue, amidst the controversy that ensued from his ultimately-permitted trip to former club Sevilla, but he returns to compete with Gianluca Lapadula for the Rossoneri’s lone-striker spot.

Fernandez, meanwhile, is not included due to an “inflamed left knee”, the Diavolo’s official website reports.
