Gomez: 'Atalanta had to step up a gear'

Papu Gomez explains when Atalanta realised they needed to ‘step up a gear’ in the Champions League. “Nobody expected us to get this far.”

La Dea are in their first ever Champions League campaign and lost the opening three group games, but completed a remarkable comeback to not only qualify, but also eliminate Valencia in the Round of 16.

“We realised after the first three games that what we were doing was not enough,” Papu told Fabio Cannavaro in an Instagram Live chat.

Gomez hails impressive Atalanta attack

Captain Alejandro Gomez has claimed the options in attack at Atalanta are ‘crazy’ regarding 'the budget in a provincial side’ like the Orobici.

The Orobici captain spoke to the former Italy international Christian Vieri about his two partners in attack, Josip Ilicic and Duvan Zapata.

“I don’t enjoy anything during the week. Matchday is my day off,” Gomez told Vieri on Instagram Live. “Ilicic complains about everything, but he’s like that, sometimes he’s joking.

'Atalanta-Valencia worsened coronavirus'

Alejandro Gomez admits Atalanta’s Champions League match against Valencia at San Siro “has something to do” with the coronavirus outbreak in Bergamo.

Around 40,000 Atalanta fans flocked from Bergamo to watch their team thrash Valencia 4-1 in the Champions League Round of 16 last month.

However, it has since come to light that the historic occasion may have been a trigger for the COVID-19 to spread in the Lombardy region.

Percassi: 'They love what they do'

President Antonio Percassi has praised Atalanta’s attacking duo Josip Ilicic and Papu Gomez, claiming it’s obvious to “tell that they love what they’re doing.”

Gomez: 'We still need a miracle'

Captain Alejandro Gomez insists that Atalanta will “still need a miracle” at the Mestalla when La Dea travel to Valencia for the return leg.

La Dea convinced the spectators with a thumping 4-1 win at San Siro last night, but the Orobici captain would like to calm down the expectations ahead of the second leg in Spain.

“We played a great game, with a likeable result,” he told Atalanta’s official website. “The 4-1 will allow us to travel to Valencia with two results available to go through.

Gomez: 'Knew how to hurt Valencia'

Papu Gomez said Atalanta “knew how to hurt” Valencia, but regrets taking a few too many risks in the 4-1 Champions League triumph.

It was an almost perfect first leg performance at San Siro in their debut Champions League Round of 16, rushing into a 4-0 lead with Hans Hateboer’s brace, Josip Ilicic and Remo Freuler scorchers.

The late Denis Cheryshev away goal leaves some anxiety for the second leg, which will be at the Mestalla on March 10.
