Happy birthday, Marco van Basten

Today is the 53rd birthday of Milan legend Marco van Basten, a three-time Ballon d’Or winner.

The Dutchman was born in Utrecht on October 31, 1964, but made his professional debut for Ajax in April 1982, scoring on his debut.

The sight of Van Basten finding the back of the net would become a familiar one over the following five seasons, with the striker 152 goals in 172 games for the club across all competitions.

Gullit hails Hateboer and De Roon

Ruud Gullit confirms he is watching Atalanta men Marten de Roon and Hans Hateboer for a senior Netherlands call-up.

The assistant manager to Dick Advocaat was thoroughly impressed by 23-year-old Hateboer, who can play at right-back, right wing-back or in central defence.

He already has two goals in eight caps for his country at Under-21 level.

As for 26-year-old midfielder De Roon, he played two senior Dutch games, but was not called up so far this season.

De Rossi on crutches after knock

Daniele De Rossi left the Amsterdam Arena on crutches after picking up a back injury during Italy’s 2-1 win over the Netherlands.

The Roma midfielder had been wearing the captain’s armband this evening, but was forced off after 36 minutes.

He accidentally got a knee in the back and was left to hobble painfully off the field, then with great difficulty made it down the steps to the locker room.

Spinazzola: 'Wonderful Italy debut'

Atalanta wing-back Leonardo Spinazzola enjoyed his senior Italy debut in the 2-1 friendly win over the Netherlands. “It’s a wonderful experience.”

He turned 24 on Saturday and has four assists in 22 Serie A games this season.

“It was a wonderful experience, we found a very important victory against a big team. I am very happy with my current form and my senior debut with the Nazionale,” he told Rai Sport.

Gagliardini: 'Italy debut, but a year ago...'

Roberto Gagliardini made his senior Italy debut and the Inter midfielder can hardly believe it. “A year ago I hadn’t made my Serie A debut.”

Gagliardini came on earlier than expected during the 2-1 friendly victory away to the Netherlands, as Daniele De Rossi went off with a bruised back.

“It’s a shame for Daniele, I saw him with crutches. We were a man down, so had to get on the pitch as quickly as possible,” Gagliardini told Rai Sport.

The Atalanta forward came off the bench to replace Eder after 69 minutes in Amsterdam, as the Azzurri beat the Netherlands 2-1.

“I thought of all the sacrifices I made to get here and couldn’t wait to get on the pitch. I thank the Coach for this opportunity,” the striker told Rai Sport.
