Giampiero Ventura insists Italy “can be the surprise” of the 2018 World Cup in Russia after a 2-1 friendly win in the Netherlands.

Eder and Leonardo Bonucci fought back after an unlucky Alessio Romagnoli own goal in the Amsterdam Arena.

“It counts for the ranking, but we had a couple of things tonight to care about,” Ventura told Rai Sport.

Ventura: 'Clear with Barzagli'

Giampiero Ventura insists he clarified the situation with Andrea Barzagli after the defender left the Italy camp for “personal problems.”

The Juventus centre-back sparked controversy when he was allowed to leave international duty early only to then show up on the Facebook page of a DJ.

“I had a private meeting with Barzagli on his personal problems,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

Holland lost their way

The innovators of Total Football sacked Danny Blind because they lack identity and direction, writes Nick Valerio.

When Italy visit the Amsterdam Arena on Tuesday evening, Danny Blind won’t be on the bench. His assistant manager, Fred Grim, takes what must be the least appealing hot-seat in football right now. You could still bet on Holland pulling off an improbable upset using this bonus code for the UK, but the fact remains Blind’s catastrophic reign was just the culmination of a long slide into the abyss.

Never-Netherlands

Holland like to paint themselves as the antithesis of Italian football, but history suggests the Azzurri have the upper hand, writes Susy Campanale.

Dutch football has traditionally looked down on more or less everyone else, insisting themselves more creative than other European nations, more tactically astute than the Brazilians and more revolutionary than Arrigo Sacchi. Above all, they place themselves as the antithesis to Italy on the sporting scale, depicting the Azzurri and Serie A as negative, mired in catenaccio and about stopping the opposition from playing beautiful football rather than creating any of their own. This, of course, makes it particularly joyous to beat them.

De Vrij injury not serious

Stefan de Vrij has been diagnosed with a bruised foot, but the Lazio defender avoided more serious injury on international duty.

The centre-back missed last night’s 2-0 defeat to Bulgaria, a result that prompted the Netherlands to sack Coach Danny Blind.

He flew back to Rome today and Lazio released a statement confirming he has bruised his right foot where it meets the ankle.

Ventura: 'Italy and U21s co-ordinate'

Giampiero Ventura admits he’ll have to co-ordinate with the Italy Under-21 side for the European Championships and Spain showdown.

The Azzurri are joint top of their group with Spain, divided by goal difference, so their World Cup qualification could depend on the September 2 head-to-head.

These sides already drew 1-1 in Turin, so the pressure is on Ventura to win on Spanish soil.

However, the numerous young players in the senior Nazionale must also be divided up for the European Under-21 Championships in June.
