Italian coach Francesco Farioli is considered the leading candidate to take over at Ajax following Graham Potter’s decision not to accept the offer, Gianluca Di Marzio details.

The Amsterdam outfit have not had a positive season under John van ‘t Schip and currently find themselves fifth in the Eredivisie table after 32 matches, 35 points behind winners PSV and nine points behind fourth place AZ Alkmaar, missing out on European competition.

Ajax had been hoping to reach an agreement with former Chelsea and Brighton coach Potter, but the English tactician failed to agree a salary with the Dutch giants, forcing them to look elsewhere for a new head coach.

Ajax on Farioli

Di Marzio details how Ajax have been in close contact with Farioli following Potter’s decision and are seriously interested in appointing the OGC Nice coach this summer, making him their leading candidate.

Should the 35-year-old be appointed, he’d become the first Italian coach in the history of the club. Furthermore, their last 22 coaches have all been Dutch, showing a break from tradition.
