Pirlo: ‘I wanted to retire’

Andrea Pirlo confirms “I really thought about quitting” after Milan’s Champions League final defeat to Liverpool in 2005.

The Rossoneri were 3-0 up at half-time in Istanbul, but allowed the English side to draw level and then lost on penalties.

The former midfielder said in his autobiography that the defeat made him want to retire from football, and that wasn’t hyperbole.

“The disappointment remains, but you can’t go back,” Pirlo told reporters as he received the Facchetti Prize today.

Pirlo reveals tribute match line-ups

The full list of players for Andrea Pirlo’s farewell match has been revealed, including Ronaldo, Frank Lampard, Alessandro Del Piero and Clarence Seedorf.

The former midfielder retired at the end of the 2017 MLS season, but will play in a farewell match at San Siro on May 21.

Some names had already been revealed, but now Il Maestro has announced the full star-studded line-up.

Most of the 2006 World Cup winning squad will be there, as well as legends like Ronaldo, Andriy Shevchenko, Cafu and Demetrio Albertini.

Pirlo names testimonial stars

Andrea Pirlo named just some of the stars for his testimonial, including Francesco Totti, Gigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Alessandro Del Piero, Marcos Cafu, Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Nesta, Manuel Rui Costa and Frank Lampard.

The midfielder will say goodbye to his football career in La Notte del Maestro at San Siro on May 21.

Most of the players have been confirmed, but the forwards are still to be named.

Ancelotti wants Pirlo in Italy staff

Carlo Ancelotti has asked to both his son and Andrea Pirlo in his staff if he takes over the Italy job, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Coach had a meeting with the FIGC representatives this week in Rome and will give them a firm reply at the end of this month.

The latest reports suggest that Ancelotti laid down some conditions for taking the role and that includes having his son Davide – who already caused some waves at Bayern Munich – and former Italy hero Pirlo in his coaching staff.

Andrea Pirlo believes Juventus are favourites for the Scudetto clash, as “they can approach it in a different way, whereas Napoli are forced to win.”

Former Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo understood Gianluigi Buffon’s rage - “he thought it was his last chance to win the Champions League”.

The Bianconeri were on the verge of a historic comeback against Real Madrid, but the Spaniards were awarded a last-minute penalty to send the Italian champions out.

Buffon was infuriated by Michael Oliver’s decision, shouting in the official’s face before being shown a red card.

Pirlo names best teammates, opponents

Andrea Pirlo has named his best opponents and teammates, ahead of his farewell match next month.

The legendary midfielder retired from football at the end of last year, but he’ll have a final send-off at San Siro on May 21.

Today he held a Press conference to present the game, which ended with a Q&A about the best players he played with and against.

“My technically strongest teammate was Ronaldinho,” Pirlo explained.

Andrea Pirlo admits “I’ve had talks with a lot of people” from both clubs and national teams about his future.

The former midfielder retired after the conclusion of the 2017 Major League Soccer Season, having finished his career with New York City FC.

He’ll have a farewell match at San Siro on May 19, his 39th birthday.
