Spalletti: ‘Roma will play to win’

Roma’s Luciano Spalletti won't settle for a dignified exit against Real Madrid - “I wouldn’t even Coach anyone who thinks like that”.

The Giallorossi are trailing 2-0 from the first leg of the Champions League Last 16, and the tactician was asked whether the fans accept a proud performance tomorrow, even if they go out.

“I think that’s the wrong position, we have to send clear messages to the team,” Spalletti insisted in his pre-match Press conference.

Zidane: ‘Roma are very strong’

Real Madrid Coach Zinedine Zidane admits Roma are “very strong” but “I’m more concerned with my own team”.

The Spanish giants won the first leg at Stadio Olimpico 2-0, and are looking to seal their place in the Champions League Quarter-Finals tomorrow.

“They’re a very good team, but I’m more concerned with my own team,” Zidane told reporters in the pre-match Press conference.

Bale prepares for Roma

Real Madrid's Gareth Bale is following a strict discipline to avoid injuries ahead of facing Roma, say reports.

The two teams face each other in the Champions League return leg tomorrow evening at 19:45.

Bale missed out on the first game but is expected to start in the return at the Bernabeu.

The Welshman has been excellent whenever he was able to play this season, but his calf injury held him back for long spells, including almost all Champions League games so far.

Bale ready for Roma?

Gareth Bale has returned to training for Real Madrid, and could be fit to face Roma.

The Giallorossi travel to Spain next week for the return leg of their Champions League Last 16 tie, looking to overturn a 2-0 deficit.

It was revealed yesterday that Karim Benzema is likely to miss the match, but it appears Bale is in contention after the Welsh international returned to training today after a calf injury.

“He trained with us,” Coach Zinedine Zidane confirmed.

Real Madrid have named their squad to face Roma on Wednesday, with Gareth Bale absent.

The Welsh winger suffered a calf injury against Sporting Gijon in January, and there is currently no date set for his recovery.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema will be present for the Champions League Last 16 first leg though, with former Inter playmaker Mateo Kovacic also included.

Bale to skip Roma return leg

Real Madrid's Gareth Bale may sit out not just the first Champions League match but the return leg against Roma as well.

The Giallorossi face the Merengues for the Last 16 round on February 17, with the return leg at the Bernabeu scheduled for March 8.

Bale's calf injury will almost certainly keep him off the pitch for the first game, but rumours suggest he may have to miss the second contest as well.

Marcelo doubt for Roma too

The Spanish club released a statement today confirming Marcelo has dislocated his shoulder and will be out of action for at least two weeks.

This means he could well miss the Champions League Round of 16 clash with Roma.

Bale to skip Roma game

Real Madrid's Gareth Bale could miss out on the Champions League Roma game as his injury holds him back.

Giallorossi fans will be drawing a sigh of relief as they may go into February 17's elimination game without having to face one of their rivals' most prepossessing champions.

According to Spanish publication AS, the Welshman's calf injury is not recovering properly in spite of initial reports that he was very near healing.

Bale was injured in mid-January against Sporting Gijon and has suffered recurring trouble with his calf.

Ancelotti’s Bernabeu balancing act

Carlo Ancelotti has his hands full as Real Madrid face Juventus in the Champions League. Andrew Tuft looks at the complex situation at Santiago Bernabeu.

There’s a balancing act going on at Santiago Bernabeu as Real Madrid try to juggle Operation 30 points - the name given by the Press to Los Blancos’ attempt to chase down League leaders Barcelona - with the defence of the Champions League.

For a club all about taking the spotlight, becoming the first team of the Champions League era to defend the trophy matters almost as much as the constant struggle with Barca for domestic supremacy.
