Serie A stars up for Team of the Year

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and Napoli forward Dries Mertens are among the names nominated for UEFA’s Team of the Year.

European football’s governing body is looking to find the best XI from 2017, with a poll on its official website.

Club and international performances over the calendar year are taken into account, and there are several Serie A stars nominated.

Buffon is nominated for best goalkeeper, with Juventus teammates Giorgio Chiellini and Alex Sandro among the candidates for the defence.

Alex Sandro: Juve must improve

Alex Sandro has urged Juventus to improve quickly after their 1-1 draw with Sporting CP in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Alex Sandro was criticised for his display in Lisbon, but the left-back felt his Juve teammates were collectively responsible for not playing at their “usual level”.

“We weren’t at our usual level in the first half,” he said after the game.

New Juve salary for Alex Sandro

Alex Sandro is expected to sign a new contract with Juventus worth €5m per year, plus bonuses to match Chelsea’s proposal.

The Brazilian left-back currently has a deal to June 2020 that gives him €2.8m per year wages.

After rejecting numerous huge offers from Antonio Conte’s Chelsea over the summer, Juve intend to lock him down to a more lucrative contract.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Alex Sandro will double his basic salary to €5m in a new deal running to June 2022.

Chiellini, Alex Sandro to renew

Alex Sandro is believed to be very close to a Juventus renewal, while a contract is also being prepared for Giorgio Chiellini.

With the close of the transfer window, the Bianconeri are now focusing on contracts for some of their existing stars.

Alex Sandro was pursued by Chelsea for most of the summer, and today’s Corriere dello Sport reports that he’s very close to agreeing an improved contract.

The Brazilian will sign until 2022, with an increase in wages, ruling out a departure next summer.

Allegri injury woes for Camp Nou

Max Allegri warns Sami Khedira and Claudio Marchisio won’t face Barcelona, while Juventus wait on Alex Sandro, Giorgio Chiellini and Mario Mandzukic.

The Champions League showdown at Camp Nou is on Tuesday evening and the Coach rested several top names in the 3-0 Serie A victory over Chievo on Saturday.

L’Equipe names top Serie A XI

French newspaper L’Équipe has named its best XI for Serie A, with players from Juventus, Napoli, Milan and Roma.

The sports paper has released a best team for all of the top five leagues, and has but the Serie A XI into a 4-3-3 shape.

Gianluigi Buffon is in goal, with his teammate Alex Sandro at left-back and Milan’s Andrea Conti on the other side.

Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli and Rossoneri captain Leonardo Bonucci are in the centre of defence.
