Gattuso: ‘Positive Milan energy’

Milan Coach Gennaro Gattuso praises the ‘positive energy’ created by the arrival of Leonardo and Paolo Maldini at the club.

Both men are former Rossoneri players who have recently returned to San Siro, with Leonardo coming in as general manager and club icon Maldini as a director.

The duo attended a Diavolo training session yesterday, presided over by Gattuso, who is hoping it will become a regular occurrence.

Leonardo: ‘Milinkovic-Savic impossible’

Milan technical director Leonardo admits it’s “impossible” to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio this summer.

The Rossoneri have been linked with a move for the Serbian, but his price tag means a move to San Siro can’t happen, at least this summer.

“In light of Financial Fair Play we won’t be signing a top midfielder,” Leonardo explained at Paolo Maldini’s presentation Press conference.

Maldini shows Milan ambition

Paolo Maldini refused to join the Rossoneri board under Yonghong Li, so Gaby McKay says his arrival now represents a big step forward.

One of the biggest red flags in Yonghong Li’s tenure as Milan owner came before the Chinese businessman had even taken over the club.

In October 2016, Li was head of a consortium called Sino-Europe Sports which was looking to buy the Rossoneri from Silvio Berlusconi. With the takeover effectively having to be paid for in instalments and a lack of clarity over who made up the group, the potential new owners sought to bring a club legend on board to placate fans.

Leonardo: Why Caldara over Bonucci…

Leonardo has explained why Milan swapped Leonardo Bonucci for Mattia Caldara. “Bonucci is for now, Mattia is for the future and now.”

Caldara and Bonucci exchanged clubs in a straight swap, only a month after the former joined up with Juventus for the first time and barely a year since the latter’s transfer to Milan.

“I think every round of negotiations has its own story, it can start in one way and end up in another,” said the general manager at a Press conference.

Milan learned their lesson

After spending more than they could afford last summer, Milan are taking a more cautious - and potentially more efficient - approach to the transfer market this year, writes Vilizar Yakimov.

It is very likely that the 2017-18 campaign will go down as one of the worst in Milan’s recent history. Despite finishing sixth and securing an Europa League spot, the Rossoneri spent almost €200m on the mercato, lost their owners and have been forced to start from ground zero once again this term.
