Prandelli laments dearth of talent

Cesare Prandelli has once again lamented the lack of young talent coming through the ranks in Italy.

The Azzurri's catastrophic exit from the World Cup last summer prompted a reshuffle within the FIGC.

Arrigo Sacchi, Roberto Baggio and Gianni Rivera have since been appointed to improve the game at grassroots level.

"Only eight per cent of youngsters in our academies make it to the first team while years ago the figure was 25 per cent.

"Many teams prefer to go looking abroad."

'Cassano and Balotelli are Italy's future'

Gigi Buffon feels a strike partnership composed of Antonio Cassano and Mario Balotelli is the future of the Italian national team.

Prandelli backs Cassano

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli doesn't believe Antonio Cassano will make any more mistakes in his career.

Prandelli stood by Cassano when Sampdoria asked that his contract be rescinded in October.

The 28-year-old didn't play for two months and Prandelli couldn't pick him for Italy.

Cassano has since joined Milan and is making a good impression at San Siro.

"He feels a great responsibility because he is becoming a father," Prandelli said.

The forgotten full-back

As Italy return to action next month against Germany, Antonio Labbate urges Cesare Prandelli to select an in-form Parma player who deserves another Azzurri chance.

In Cesare Prandelli's six international games in charge of the Italian national side, including the abandoned European Championship qualifier against Serbia, the tactician has experimented with five different right-backs.

Juventus' Marco Motta was given 70 minutes on Prandelli's debut, Mattia Cassani of Palermo has played for 230 minutes, an hour has been handed to Inter's Davide Santon, Fiorentina's Lorenzo De Silvestri started and finished the demolition of the Faroe Islands and veteran Gianluca Zambrotta began the soon to be interrupted Serbia tie.
