Marchisio's final show of Juve love

Claudio Marchisio could've been a weight on Juventus this season, so because of that love, he let the Old Lady go. Richard Hall salutes Il Principino.

He didn’t have to do it, his contract ran until 2020, yet Claudio Marchisio’s love for Juventus saw him mutually rescind his deal and leave the club which he adores so much. His picture on social media of him as a boy donning a Juventus shirt said: “I can’t stop looking at his photograph and these stripes on which I wrote my life as a man and a footballer”. There ended a 25-year affiliation with The Old Lady, professionally at least. It was a move that anyone involved with football can sympathise with, as it would’ve been heart-wrenching to do.

Buffon wins Ligue 1 debut

Gianluigi Buffon had relatively little to do on his Ligue 1 debut, as Paris Saint-Germain beat SM Caen 3-0 with Timothy Weah on target.

The 40-year-old shot-stopper was given the gloves this evening, as Alphonse Areola is out injured, putting the issue of who will be first choice on the backburner for the moment.

Neymar opened the scoring on his first Ligue 1 appearance since February, followed by Adrien Rabiot and Timothy Weah.

It was a very special goal for the 18-year-old son of PSG and Milan legend George Weah.

Buffon to start Ligue 1 debut

Gianluigi Buffon will start in goal for Paris Saint-Germain in this evening’s Ligue 1 opener against SM Caen.

Coach Thomas Tuchel had kept his cards close to his chest when asked to choose between Alphonse Areola and Buffon for the gloves.

However, for the opening match at least, the decision is out of his hands.

Areola is not even in the squad to face Caen, missing out along with Kylian Mbappé, Presnel Kimpembe, Marco Verratti, Layvin Kurzawa and Edinson Cavani.
